How to become a JP in NSW

There have been recent changes to the procedures for appointment and reappointment of Justices of the Peace in New South Wales. However, rather than provide the information here, this link will take you direct to the NSW Attorney General's Department JP pages.

JP Code of Conduct

The Attorney General's Department has developed a Code of Conduct for Justices of the Peace in New South Wales, which the NSWJA has adopted.

Use of the letters 'JP'

See clause 9 of the JP Code of Conduct.

Attorney Generals Registration Numbers

Since the promulgation of the Justices of the Peace Act 2002 all JPs in New South Wales have been issued, upon appointment or reappointment, a new Registration Number.

Justice of the Peace Handbook

The NSW Attorney General's Department has released a new version of A handbook for Justices of the Peace in New South Wales, in accordance with the enactment of the Justices of the Peace Act 2002.

Foreign language documents that need interpreting

Any document that needs to be interpreted from a foreign language into English must be translated by a translator recognized by the Commonwealth of Australia.
